Rutherford County North Carolina
In 1832 a certain John Lankford presented an affidavit to the Rutherford County Court "setting forth that the widow Catharine Bridgman is abusing & beating her children in a barbarous & inhuman manner" whereupon the court ordered that the sheriff take the children into his care forthwith and bring them into court the next day to be bound out. 72
